New Policy and Practice Note: Putting UK-Grown Pulses Back on the Table

We’re excited to publish the first in a series of Policy and Practice notes, which will draw on insights from across the Transforming UK Food Systems (TUKFS) programme. This first note highlights the vital role of UK-grown beans and pulses in building a healthier, more sustainable, and more secure food system.

Putting UK-Grown Pulses Back on the Table explores the barriers and opportunities for UK-grown pulses. It features case studies, identifies key challenges, and offers recommendations for policy and practice around:

  • Incentivising domestic protein crops
  • Breeding and agronomy research
  • Supply chain investment
  • Dietary change campaigns

With the potential to boost food security, improve public health, and support climate-friendly farming, pulses are a powerful yet underutilised part of the UK diet. Realising this potential will require coordinated efforts to both increase domestic production and encourage greater consumption. This note offers a timely and evidence-informed foundation to put UK grown pulses back on the table.
